The Garden Dragon

HERMIONEWe’ve put all our pocket money together.
It comes to two and sixpence. Half a crown!
Down at Mister Kenyon’s shop in the village we buy a tin of baked beans, a tin of peaches and a box of Maltesers.
They’re a bit snobby about all those things at home — tinned stuff and chocolate — so that makes it even better.
We even have enough change to buy some chewing gum.
But, ‘No — no, that’s going too far,’ says Geoffrey.
Walking back home, we plan our feast.
We work out that we have to heat up the beans.
But the first problem is to open the tins.
The tin opener’s a bit rubbish and we can’t make it work.
It keeps slipping off.
So Geoffrey goes to the shed and gets a screwdriver and a hammer. He sits on the back doorstep holding the tin of beans between his sandals.
Ha ha — he looks just like a chimpanzee.
He bashes holes in the lid by hitting the screwdriver with the hammer.
It makes a right mess of his socks, all that bean sauce splashed about.
